Lionel Messi is the GOAT on the football pitch and when it comes to watches, he might be one of the beautiful game’s goatiest collectors too. In his line-up, you’ll find Rolex Yacht-Masters, Daytonas and Datejusts, and when he’s not repping the crown, he’s crushing hard on Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks.

Over the years, Messi has been seen wearing the Royal Oak Jumbo and Chronograph, and most recently, we clocked a rare sighting of the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked ‘Cactus Jack’ – the limited-edition Travis Scott-designed timepiece. In a photo shared to 504 million followers on his personal Instagram, Messi posed next to his wife Antonela Roccuzzo, while wearing the hard-to-get RO – distinctive for its brown colouring.

Scott knows a thing or two about collabs. In the studio he’s worked with DrakeBeyoncé, 21 Savage, and James Blake. And creatively he’s linked up with Dior, and Nike, too. But last year he ticked off an AP link-up from his bucket list with a run of 200 brown ceramic (a first for the brand) Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked ‘Cactus Jack’ watches. These bad boys, nicknamed the ‘Chocolate AP,’ retailed for £155,000, and now go for double that on the secondary market. And Messi’s in good watch nerd company, too, joining Orlando Bloom, Lil BabyEd Sheeran, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who all managed to grab the rare release.

Looking for AP watches? Visit www.bitdials.eu and pay with crypto.

Messi wearing the Travis Scott Royal Oak ties into AP’s whole cultural crossover thing it’s got nailed. Scott’s Royal Oak wasn’t the first time AP has worked with a musician on a limited-edition release. Around 2005, Audemars worked with Jay-Z on a set of 20 Royal Oak offshores to celebrate the rapper’s 10th year in music. And in 2013, it worked with LeBron James on an Offshore Chronograph.

In terms of Messi’s choice of wearing Scott’s watch, could there be anything else to it? Maybe. Scott released an Argentina-inspired football jersey to promote his Circus Maximus tour, so he clearly gets the country’s football heritage. And in “Meltdown” Scott shouts out the footie legend with the lyric “The boy going Lionel Messi, I go Tom Brady.”

With Scott showing love for the legendary player in his lyrics and merch, Messi wearing the ‘Cactus Jack’ Royal Oak could be him returning the favour. Either way, it’s a good old fashioned case of real respecting real – which we love to see.

In general, the more intricate a timepiece is, the more prestigious the creation becomes. However, fine watchmaking isn’t just about the number of features it has. There is an artistry and appearance that need to allow the owner to view and use the timepiece easily without being confused by too much clutter. Also, complicated timepieces need to conform to a reasonable size constraint. Even though many watches are becoming bigger, there is a limit to how big an owner would want.

A typical highly complicated timepiece might take up to 6 months to complete. This drives up the cost of these timepieces, sometimes over $100,000, partly due to the time required to assemble, partly due to the amount of parts used to assemble it, and partly due to the limited number of fully assembled timepieces that could be made in that timespan.

So, let’s find out what the most complicated watches ever made are.

Let’s take a look at the most exquisite watches on BitDials that you can buy with cryptocurrency.

IWC on BitDials. Buy with Bitcoin
The IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Sidérale Scafusia

The Portuguieser Sidérale Scafusia Reference IW504101 is an amazing timepiece. Yes, it is a great looking watch by itself on the front. But it actually has a fully working star chart on the back side. Yet, it isn’t thicker than 17.5 mm even though it is packed with unique features. It miniaturizes the overwhelming scale of the cosmos down to your wrist.

It has a 46 mm platinum case. It is powered by an IWC-manufactured movement – the caliber 94900. It is hand wound but provides an amazing 96 hours of power reserve. It is built with sand blasted rhodium plating and has a huge amount of 56 jewels. It only beats at 18000 vph (2.5 hz).

This is by far the most complex watch produced by IWC Schaffhausen. This is not just a timepiece but a personalized astronomical instrument which allows you to see the night sky from your own wrist. It shows more than 500 stars and constellations and adjusts for summer time and winter time. It actually predicts the times of sunrise and sunset.

The sidereal time on the front of the watch is a timekeeping system that astronomers use to locate celestial objects and where to point a telescope in the sky. Due to the massive complexity, this timepiece might sell for around $850,000 today.

Buy Harry Winston with Crypto on BitDials
The Harry Winston Opus 14

It has several inspirations including the “Route 66” sign, the jukebox which has platters that play rock and roll music, and also the Hollywood walk of fame. These elements are clearly visible from the front side of the timepiece. When you press the pusher at 4 o’clock it activates a moving arm that picks the disk up and sets it to the platform to be read. You can select the GMT, function, the Date function or the walk of fame symbol. The push of the button will bring the platter of your choice to the 2-3 o’clock position. It is worth viewing this to believe its amazing workmanship in action.

It has two separate power reserves. One provides 68 hours of reserve for the standard time, and the other powers the rest of the GMT movement.

Built with 1,066 components, this is a very complex timepiece. It is limited to only 50 pieces, keeping this timepiece uniquely rare.

In 1970, one of the most famed, feared, and phenomenal aircraft in history – the SR-71 Blackbird – had a catastrophic incident. The plane, number 61-7970, went down 20 miles east of El Paso, Texas, after a collision with the KC-135Q (59-1474) refueling tanker. The pilot and his RSO (Reconnaissance Systems Officer) ejected relatively safely, but obviously, the SR-71 was lost. Since then, pieces of the fuselage – a futuristic titanium alloy mixed with metals such as vanadium and iron – have appeared for sale on occasion. Now, they’re a part of a watch, specifically the crank handle and screw-down bezel on Urwerk’s new EMC SR-71.

Interested in Urwerk’s timepieces? Browse our collection or send your request.

The idea originated when two entrepreneurs, Jason Sarkoyan and Dr. Roman Sperl, showed up at the Urwerk Headquarters in December 2020. Sarkoyan is a watch collector and designer and was wearing the EMC Black. Dr. Sperl, on the other hand, is an aeronautical engineer and a specialist in the field of the SR-71 Blackbird. They had founded a company called Dreamland, which, according to the press release, is a “lifestyle brand dedicated to developing products that not only cater to the needs of space exploration but also bring the thrill of America’s aerospace achievements into everyday life.”

If you’ve followed Urwerk, you know their EMC – Electro-Mechanical Control – which has been out since 2013. The core feature is an optical sensor (linked to a control board) that checks the balance wheel’s 4 Hz beat rate against a 16,000,000 Hz electronic oscillator benchmark. An integrated circuit has a calculator capable of determining the differential, and with a press of a button at about 8 o’clock on the case, you can get the readout of the chronometric precision of the watch on the 10 o’clock subdial. There’s also a power reserve, running seconds (with an SR-71 on the tip of the hand), and of course, the hours and minutes.

In addition to the parts of the Blackbird, the case is made out of blacked-out titanium and steel and is rated to 30m. At 47.55mm wide, 49.57mm long, and 17.58mm thick, it’s not a small watch. Inside is the in-house EMC manually-wound movement with 80 hours of power reserve. The watch will be limited to 10 pieces and has a price tag of 150,000 CHF.

]]>
Paris 2024 Summer Games underway, it comes as no surprise that Omega is leaning hard into its Olympics partnership, as the Swiss watchmaker has served as the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932. Aside from all the on-the-ground timekeeping responsibilities, Omega also takes it upon itself to produce a line of timepieces dedicated to the global sporting event. The newest model to join the collection is the Omega Paris 2024 Bronze Gold Edition watch, which mixes bronze, silver, and gold into one watch as a nod to the medals that the world’s top athletes are currently competing for.

Looking for the watch from Omega? Discover our selection and buy with Bitcoin.

If the overall look of the watch is familiar, that’s because the Paris 2024 Bronze Gold Edition is inspired by the Omega CK 859 from 1938, which the company had already revived in a modern execution in 2022. The Olympic watch we have here features a 39mm (11.7mm thick and 46.2mm lug-to-lug) case made from Omega’s proprietary Bronze Gold alloy that debuted in the 2021 Seamaster 300 collection. For those who aren’t as familiar with Bronze Gold, it’s a mix of gold (37.5%), copper, palladium, and silver, resulting in a soft pink hue that sits somewhere in between yellow and red gold. Plus, it won’t oxidize like traditional bronze does.

In true Omega form, the back of the watch case includes a stamped and frosted Olympic Games Paris 2024 medallion. While “CK” was Omega’s old-school code for stainless steel, the top of the caseback is inscribed with “BG 859” in reference to the Bronze Gold case material.

Discover Omega watches with Bitcoin on BitDials

Moving from third-place medal inspiration to second, the dial of the Paris 2024 Bronze Gold Edition watch is fashioned from — you guessed it — 925 silver. At the center of the silver dial is the classic “Clou de Paris” decoration, apt considering where the Olympics are taking place this year. The surface is punctuated with a vintage Omega logo and Arabic numerals at 3, 9, and 12. Encircling the hobnail-patterned section is a circular brushed minute track, which is the same finish on the small seconds subdial track at 6 o’clock.

How about top-of-the-podium gold, you ask? Well, that’s found in the pair of hands at the center of the dial and the small seconds hand, which are all made from Sedna Gold and coated with a special PVD Bronze Gold coating.

Powering the new Omega Paris 2024 Bronze Gold Edition watch is the manual-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8926, based on the vintage 30T2 movement. With certifications from both METAS and COSC, this 3.5 Hz movement is resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss and offers 72 hours of power reserve. Finally, Omega pairs the watch with a brown calfskin leather strap, fitted with a sandblasted Bronze Gold buckle with a polished vintage Omega logo relief.

For those who want an expensive souvenir of this year’s Summer Olympics and any old hat or t-shirt won’t do, the $12,000 USD Omega Paris 2024 Bronze Gold Edition watch may be the winning contender. For more information about the Omega Paris 2024 Bronze Gold Edition ref. 522.92.39.21.99.001, please visit the brand’s website

The post Top 3 Things to Look for When Buying a Rolex as an Investment. appeared first on BitDials | The Crypto Luxury Marketplace.

]]>
The best Rolex watches are renowned for their remarkable ability to hold and even appreciate in value over time, despite receiving daily wear from their owners. While Rolex watches undoubtedly maintain their worth far better than the vast majority of watches from other manufacturers, not all models possess the unique combination of traits that allow them to truly appreciate and serve as blue-chip investments.

Discover Rolex original timepieces on BitDials. Buy with Bitcoin, Ether, Monero and etc..

Many discerning collectors and enthusiasts choose to purchase the best Rolex watches not only for their exceptional craftsmanship and timeless designs but also for their potential to grow in value. These iconic timepieces represent a wise investment, as the most coveted models have consistently demonstrated their capacity to outperform traditional financial assets, making them highly sought-after by those who appreciate both horological excellence and long-term value appreciation.

However, it’s important to note that not every Rolex watch is created equal in terms of investment potential. The best Rolex watches that tend to appreciate the most are often those with limited production runs, historical significance, or distinctive features that capture the imagination of collectors worldwide. By carefully curating a collection of the finest and rarest Rolex models, savvy investors can potentially reap handsome rewards while enjoying the enduring beauty and prestige of owning one of the best Rolex watches the world has to offer.

A vintage Submariner ref. 5512 with a gilt dial.

1. Vintage Models Are The Most Expensive

While modern Rolex watches are packed with all of the latest and greatest technologies and materials, it is the vintage market where all of the record-breaking valuations occur. Rolex watches that are still in production have a finite limit for how much their values can increase, since a brand-new example of the watch can always be secured directly through an authorized dealer at its regular MSRP retail price (although sometimes not without enduring an extremely long waitlist).

Much like antiques, vintage watches frequently derive their value from the fact that they are no longer in production, and the surviving examples still in existence are all that there will ever be. Additionally, since many of the older Rolex watches were treated roughly and without the same degree of care and consideration that modern Rolex watches experience, a large number were lost or destroyed throughout the years, further limiting the number of surviving examples in existence today.

Would you like to buy a watch from this brand? Send your request to BitDials.

The legendary GMT-Master II 116710BLNR is almost guaranteed to maintain its value.

2. Professional/Sport Watches Typically Hold Value Best

Not every vintage Rolex watch has the potential to be worth more than a new one simply because it is old. Certain lines of Rolex watches are more passionately collected than others, and can have much greater chances of appreciating in value. While the Rolex Datejust and President are among some of the most iconic and recognizable watches in the world, it is the Rolex professional watch collections that generally receive the most attention and the highest bids from serious collectors.

While this especially holds true on the vintage market, many Rolex collectors tend to gravitate towards the various sport/professional lines even when purchasing a contemporary Rolex timepiece. Originally, Rolex’s professional watch collections were robust, purpose-built timepieces that were designed to withstand rigorous use; however, they are now considered luxury items, and it is not an uncommon occurrence for a vintage Rolex Daytona to break the million-dollar mark at auction.

For a number of Rolex’s contemporary sport/professional watches, public demand far exceeds annual production numbers for the given watch, resulting in waitlists for certain models that can sometimes reach up to several years in length. Within the past few years, we have seen this happen for several of Rolex’s stainless steel sport/professional watches, where long waitlists at authorized dealers drive prices in the pre-owned market above retail prices for brand-new examples from authorized dealers.

The top 3 hottest Rolex right now are the reference 116500 Daytona, reference 116610 Submariner, and the Rolex model number 116710 “Batman” GMT-Master II. At the present time, all of these watches are selling on the pre-owned market above their respective retail prices. The reason for the high prices on the pre-owned market lies in the limited availability of these highly sought-after watches. One can purchase one of these at an undetermined (later) date, after spending a lengthy period of time on a waitlist; or, that same watch can be purchased pre-owned (at market price) and can be worn that very weekend.

Buy Rolex Daytona with Crypto on BitDials

When the reference 116500 Daytona with Cerachrom bezel was announced at Baselworld 2016, many collectors flocked to their local authorized dealers to put their names down on the waitlists for this highly-anticipated watch. The reference 116500 was the Daytona that many Rolex fans had long been anticipating, and as it was craft from stainless steel, it was among the most affordable Daytona offerings in the Rolex catalog. With a high level of desirability and a price point that was not out of reach for many Rolex collectors, waitlists for the reference 116500 quickly grew to several years, and prices on the pre-owned market quickly climbed to almost 50% above retail prices.

Buy Rolex Hulk with Ether on BitDials

Much like the reference 116500 Daytona, the all-green version of the reference 116610 Submariner, quickly grew in popularity, and soon experienced a demand that exceeded the number of reference 116610 “Hulk” Submariner watches that Rolex manufactured each year. For the first half-century of its existence, Rolex’s stainless steel Submariner was a watch with a black dial and a black bezel insert; however the option of bright green for the reference 116610 Submariner quickly became a popular target for collectors, and pre-owned prices soon exceeded those at authorized retail locations.

A third, contemporary, stainless steel Rolex sport/professional model that has experienced appreciation in a relatively short amount of time is the reference 116710 “Batman” GMT-Master II. First announced at Baselworld 2013, the “Batman” GMT is identical to the regular reference 116710 GMT-Master II, except for the blue coloration of its 24-hour hand and bezel insert. Much like the reference 116610 “Hulk” Submariner, the reference 116710 “Batman” GMT comes with a minor premium in retail price over its all-black counterpart; however just a few years after its initial release, pre-owned examples are selling at or above retail prices.

We can find any watch you want. Send your free enquiry.

3. Mint Condition Will Always Be Desirable

Regardless of what the future may have in store for the world of luxury watch collecting, there will always be a market for mint condition Rolex watches. From year to year, certain lines of Rolex watches gain or lose popularity, and depending on market trends, consumer preferences, and future releases by Rolex, their price can either go up or down. However, regardless of what the trends and preferences of the future may be, a watch in mint condition will always sell for more than an exact equivalent in lesser condition.

At the end of the day, the purchase of any Rolex watch as an investment involves a certain degree of speculation. The future prices of luxury watches are always uncertain, and the overall value of a watch is ultimately whatever people are willing to pay for it at a given point in time. With that in mind, a vintage Rolex sports watch in mint condition that still has its original box and paperwork is about as close to a rock-solid investment as you are likely to find in the world of high-end watches – assuming that you are able to secure one for a favorable price.

 1. A Rolex Sports model in its original condition – all period correct
 2. Unpolished – only 1 in about 100 vintage Rolex watches have not been previously polished. But these examples are highly sought after by collectors
 3. Box and Papers – a watch that has its original box and papers will almost always make a watch worth more. Perhaps as much as 35% more than one without.

There’s no shortage of brands introducing “summer” watches. Usually, this involves changing the dial color to something that isn’t navy, black, or white/silver — giving the watch a fresh, bright palette for the hot days of summer. Sometimes, brands will even change a bezel insert for extra fun summery vibes. Earlier this year, just before Watches and Wonders in Geneva, H. Moser & Cie. released a watch that is so summery it makes other brand’s efforts look positively autumnal! The new H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Centre Seconds Concept Citrus Green seems to capture the lightness of the summer months more completely.

The Pioneer line is Moser’s sportiest and most casual collection in the brand’s catalog. The Pioneer line offers the most complex case, with the most finishes and textures, and the watches are offered almost exclusively delivered on rubber or textile (with the exception of the Cylindrical Tourbillon Skeleton on leather). Launched in 2015, the Pioneer collection represented a pivot for the brand towards more casual yet no less luxurious watches. The Pioneer does not appear to compromise on the brand’s stated commitment to creating exceptional very much Swiss-made watches. The Centre Seconds Concept Citrus Green brings the brand’s pared-down “Concept” look to the Pioneer for the first time, doing away with everything but the essential elements of a time-only watch: the hands.

The specs on the larger Pioneer can be daunting: 42.8mm wide and 14.2mm thick. But the watch, perhaps not surprisingly to those with Moser experience, wears incredibly well. The case itself is plenty attractive, with carved-out flanks that feature grooving echoed in both the bracelet clasp and the pin buckle, creating cohesion around the wrist. The watch has a massive dome sapphire that facilitates its generously curved silhouette, and the screw-down crown affords 120m of water resistance, which, together with the rubber strap or metal bracelet, make this an excellent go-anywhere, do-anything option.

The 22mm curved-end rubber strap is comfortable and has just the right amount of flexibility; it doesn’t stretch or twist too much, but neither is it too stiff. The watch is also available on alligator leather or textile with the same pin buckle as the rubber or a fitted steel bracelet with Moser’s proprietary built-in push-button micro-adjustment mechanism. Owing to the curve of the case, the 14.2mm drips away when the watch is on the wrist; this effect is even more pronounced when the watch is attached to the bracelet for a more seamless transition.

The Pioneer Centre Seconds Citrus Green tells you you’re getting a pared down (Concept) citrus green fumé dial with center seconds. The bright green is certainly citrusy, but the gradient from the almost-white center to the neon periphery recalls the coloration of a watermelon skin more than any citrus. As it’s a concept dial, you won’t find any branding or markers of any kind. While this means that you’re always guessing at the exact time, that limitation is the result of a very intentional design choice as opposed to a flaw.

One of the things about Moser is it doesn’t do any half efforts. Every piece is thought through, and every component impresses. While the case and the dial get most of the attention (obviously), Moser’s in-house movements are no slouches. Here, the brand uses the automatic HMC 201, which offers a 72-hour power reserve at 21,600 vph. The movement gets an anthracite finish with gold lettering, plus Moser’s signature double striping. They’ve also skeletonized a few of the bridges and the rotor to provide a more exposed view.

The HYT Conical Tourbillon Panda features a 48mm diameter titanium case, is water-resistant up to 30 meters, and mirrors the shape and size of previous Conical Tourbillon models. The case is coated in white ceramic, extending to the titanium side grilles and frame. This finish continues onto the crown, which includes a black DLC titanium insert. The dial is topped by an ultra-domed sapphire crystal with AR treatment, showcasing a white agate chapter ring with three-dimensional, black-coated indices treated with Super-LumiNova, along with the HYT logo at the 6 o’clock position. The HYT’s signature retrograde hour indication is represented by black and white liquids propelled by bellows inside a borosilicate capillary tube. Minutes are indicated by a matte black pointer hand with white Super-LumiNova.

At the centre, attention is captivated by the conical tourbillon, developed for the series by master watchmaker Eric Coudray, and the “chaotic animation” featuring three 2.5mm white agate spheres and smaller counterweights, along with two white and four black spheres, each 1.5mm in diameter, within the futuristic tourbillon cage. The conical tourbillon completes a clockwise revolution every 30 seconds. The tourbillon movement boasts various inclinations: the spring balance is inclined at 30 degrees to the horizontal, the escape wheel at 15 degrees, and the pallet at 23 degrees. Three large white agate spheres rotate at different speeds on the cage’s periphery, with the first completing four turns per minute, the second five turns per minute, and the third six turns per minute, all clockwise. This design demonstrates the stability of the conical tourbillon’s rate, creating a mesmerizing spectacle perfectly complemented by the black-and-white aesthetic.

The HYT Conical Tourbillon Panda is powered by the manually wound calibre 701-TC, which comprises 533 components, the same as in the earlier variants of the timepiece. This movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a 40-hour power reserve. The exhibition caseback reveals the contemporary movement, which features black and rhodium-plated finishes and distinctive bellows.

This black-and-white edition of HYT’s Conical Tourbillon has a white rubber strap secured by a black DLC titanium buckle. It is limited to just eight pieces and costs CHF 355,000.

Porcelain, enamel, carbon fiber, meteorite, mother-of-pearl, onyx, aventurine… boring! They all sound exotic and have attractive applications but are, in fact, relatively common watch-dial materials. Watch companies that want to stand out have to get creative sometimes.

The dial is where the show is, and without the same technical and durability constraints of other watch components, it’s one place where watchmakers have some freedom to experiment with unconventional materials that won’t be used elsewhere in a watch. Safely beneath a crystal, a dial can be made from a wide range of things, from the banal to the bizarre (although working with almost any material entails its own challenges).

Most commonly, plated brass forms the base of the dial — to which various finishes can be applied or upon which art can be displayed. Other materials are sometimes simply reinforced by a copper plate underneath. Clear lacquer is often used to protect it, and opaque synthetic lacquer can give it color — or watchmakers can use more difficult and premium techniques, such as those that involve enamel. Other metals can also do the trick, from steel to silver and gold, as well as various kinds of stone.

To get the attention of seen-it-all watch collectors, though, an unusual dial material can help. Avant-garde independent watchmaker Artya, for example, made a watch dial using coprolite, which is a fancy-sounding word for fossilized dinosaur shit. Meteorite has also become more popular as a watch dial material because it has both an interesting look and story.

Here are some other unexpected materials that out-of-the-box-thinking watchmakers have used as dials.

Citizen chronomat

Paper: Citizen Chronomaster

The Citizen Chronomaster‘s dial is actually made from different materials in multiple layers, but what you see is the soft texture of Japanese paper. Considered a traditional craft of Japan, it is typically produced by hand using local plant fibers. On the Chronomaster, it’s sandwiched between a layer of solar panels and a clear disc to protect it. The clear disc gives the logos and text printed on it a floating, three-dimensional effect. It’s one way for Citizen emphasize its remarkably accurate watch and give it a higher-end appeal.

Breitling Bentley

Wood: Breitling Premier B01 Bentley Centenary

There’s nothing quite like the texture and emotional connection of wood, and it has found its way into watchmaking in various forms. Wood dial watches are not unheard of at all, even having featured on the Rolex President, but they remain relatively rare. The dials of the Breitling Premier watch for luxury carmaker Bentley use elm burl with a wonderfully dark and rich wood grain meant to reference elements of a Bentley’s interior.

Jaquet Droz on BitDials

Eggshell: Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Mosaic

High-end brands like Jaquet Droz are where you’ll find more experimentation with exotic materials and techniques. Eggshell sometimes describes a color, but here it’s actual quail egg shells cracked into thousands of pieces and then selected for color to create an artistic micro-mosaic — in an African elephant motif. It takes a craftsman around 200 hours to produce this unique piece of art, and the completed design is covered with a layer of clear lacquer. The technique comes from a Vietnamese art form that uses duck egg shells.

Hublot denim

Denim: Hublot Classic Fusion Jeans

Denim dial? Why not. Hublot is one brand that makes a point of using polarizing design choices and unconventional materials — other such examples include a Classic Fusion with a leather dial. The Classic Fusion Jeans watch uses a blue denim dial that appears to almost be part of the matching denim strap. Not sure if it’ll develop a fade with “whiskers” like your favorite pair of selvedge denim (or if you’d want it to), but it’s sure to catch the eye as a familiar look in an unexpected place.

Corum coins

Coins: Corum Coin

The material of the coin itself isn’t the focus here, though some are still notable as precious metals. What’s more interesting is the familiar look of a coin employed as a watch dial. A number of watch companies have taken this approach over the years, but none is known for it today like Corum, which maintains a permanent collection of Coin watches amongst its offerings. For use as watch dials, silver and gold coins are often horizontally bisected to thin them. Notable also is that the watch’s case sides are given a “coin edge” finish to make the whole package feel cohesive.

Tag Heuer

Fordite: TAG Heuer x Bamford Carrera Calibre 5

“Fordite” is actually just dried paint. But it comes from layers built up in car factories’ paint bays over years — in this instance, specifically cars painted at the Ford factory between the 1970s and 1990s. When sliced, it reveals colorful strata in unique, organic-looking patterns that never exactly repeat. These particular watches are the result of a collaboration between TAG Heuer and the brand’s official “customizer” Bamford Watch Department.

Salvaged Airplane Metal: Tockr D-Day C-47

Texas-based independent brand Tockr makes watches with dials made out of aluminum, such as the Tockr D-Day C-47. But it’s not just any aluminum. It’s metal salvaged from a WW2 paratrooper transport plane, and the patina is readily evident. The unique way the metal has aged is now preserved under sapphire crystal, and each dial is unique — some featuring extensive wear and others with traces of actual stamped lettering.
